Earliest meeting: Thursday 28th May 1885
Final meeting: Thursday 21st July 1898
The village of Taghmon in County Wexford is 8 miles west of Wexford and today has a population of barely 700 people. Races in the village can be traced back to a meeting on Thursday 28th May 1885, although the race quality was said to be inferior. For the next 14 years the village organised meetings which catered for both Flat and National Hunt Races. The course was in fields on the Wicklow side of the village and crowds were boosted by train excursions to Wexford, with cars (of a sort) being provided for the final 8 miles to the course. A final meeting was staged on Thursday 21st July 1898 when the concluding Taghmon Handicap Plate was won by Mr John Widger’s Melophoria.
